Duke officially named Kara Lawson as head coach of the women's basketball team on Saturday.

Lawson, 39, succeeds Joanne P. McCallie, who resigned earlier this month after 13 seasons. McCallie had a 330-107 record with the Blue Devils and was named the ACC Coach of the Year on three occasions.

A former WNBA and Olympic champion, Lawson had been an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics since June 2019. She previously worked as a TV analyst with ESPN and the Washington Wizards.

She played for legendary coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee, reaching three Final Fours, and spent 13 seasons as a point guard in the WNBA, last playing in 2015.

Lawson won a WNBA title with the Sacramento Monarchs in 2005 and was part of Team USA's gold-medal-winning squad in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
