Two injured as Trudeau’s motorcade crashes in California

Sheetal Sukhija - Sunday 11th February, 2018

CALIFORNIA, U.S. - In an incident on Friday, the motorcade of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was involved in a crash in California, that left two people injured.

According to Steve Swindle, the spokesman of Ventura County Fire Department, a California Highway Patrol officer was injured when his motorcycle was involved in a crash while escorting Trudeau’s motorcade.

Swindle said that the officer's motorcycle collided with a vehicle in Simi Valley.

A Canadian government immediately confirmed that Trudeau was not injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the officer and a person aboard the other vehicle were rushed to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Simi Valley Police Sgt. Chris Johnson said in a statement issued soon after, "The ... officer was thrown off the motorcycle. The vehicle involved in the crash was not part of the motorcade.”

According to reports, the crash took place as the motorcade was leaving the Ronald Reagan Library, where Trudeau delivered a speech on the friendship and partnership between the United States and Canada.

The Canadian Prime Minister is on a three-day trip to the U.S. to discuss economic and political ties between the two countries.

Before traveling to California on Friday, Trudeau visited Chicago and San Francisco earlier in the week.

Later on Friday, the Ventura County Fire Department confirmed in a tweet that the patrol officer had suffered "moderate" injuries.

Meanwhile, the passenger car driver and her son were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure but the woman’s husband told the local media that the son might have suffered a broken wrist.
